Dave James Smokes the Javelina 100
Fountain Hills, Arizona, November 1. Dave James of Trumbull, Connecticut smoked the field and the course in winning the seventh annual Javelina Jundred. James' time of 14:20:54 was over an hour faster than Karl Meltzer's course record.
Bev Anderson-Abbs of Red Bluff, California was the women's winner. Both James and Anderson-Abbs cruised to victory and led from wire to wire. At 27 hours into the race, only 73 of the 250 starters had finished. The race has a 30-hour time limit.
The race, which is held in McDowell Mountain Park, is run on a 16-mile loop that features a 680-foot climb and descent each loop. This year's weather was warm and breezy in the afternoon, with a high temperature of 83 degrees F. The Halloween race featured many competitors in costume.
