Jurek Breaks American Record for 24 Hours

Brive la Gaillard, France, May 14. Scott Jurek of Seattle broke the American record for 24 hours at the IAU 24-Hour World Championship. Jurek logged 165.705 miles, breaking Rae Clark's 20 year-old record by about a half mile. Jurek finished second in the race to Shingo Inoue of Japan, who ran 170.074 miles and also set a Japanese national record.

The American men's team of Jurek, Michael Henze and Serge Arbona finished third behind Japan and Italy.

The women's race was won easily by defending champion Anne Cecile Fontaine of France, who logged 149.002 miles. The top American finisher was Anna Piskorska, who was tenth with 133.232 miles. Suzanna Bon was in fourth or fifth place for much of the race, but faded in the last six hours and finished 17th.
