Crystal Mountain, Washington, July 25. Tony Krupicka of Leadville, Colorado broke Uli Steidl's seemingly unassailable course record in winning the 17th annual White River 50 Mile Run. Steidl's record of 6:32 was 19 minutes faster than anyone else had run this hilly trail race. Krupicka pulled away from defending champion Michael Wardian early in the race and stretched his lead throughout, finishing in 6:32:09, besting Steidl's time by 34 seconds.

The women's race held little surprise as Kami Semick of Bend, Oregon, fresh off her win at the World Cup 100K, blasted off to an early lead and cruised to an easy victory. It was Semick's first win at White River, having finished second three previous years. The race served as the USATF national 50-mile championships.
