Incline Village, Nevada, December 31. Robert and Linda Mathis, race directors of the Sierra Nevada Trail Races, were killed while trying to cross State Route 28 in Incline Village on December 30.

Robert C. Mathis and Linda Mathis, both 46, were in or close to a painted crosswalk area just south of Village Boulevard about 8 p.m., on Friday night when they were struck by a Chevy pickup being driven by 25-year-old Christopher Torii Smith of Grass Valley, Calif.

Robert Mathis died at the scene, while Linda Mathis died while being transported to Renown Regional Medical Center.

The Nevada Highway Patrol suspect drug use was involved in this collision and Smith was arrested and booked into Washoe County Jail on two counts of DUI causing death and failure to yield to a pedestrian.

The couple organized a series of trail races, ranging in distance from 8K to 50 miles, located mostly in the Sierra foothills between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe.
